Employment inclusion for individuals with disabilities is one of the main challenges in Spain. In fact, in our organization, only 4% of the people we support are working in a regular company, 15% work in segregated settings in special employment centers, where they receive the minimum wage.
However, the vast majority, 81%, do not work. Of this group, 68% cannot work due to the severity of their disability, while the remaining 13% cannot find work due to a lack of suitable opportunities.
These figures align with the latest Inclusion Indicators Report (2023) prepared by Inclusion Europe. The report clearly shows that Spain fails in providing employment for people with intellectual disabilities. A major challenge.
Promoting employment inclusion
To address these challenges, the European federation EASPD and THE NET have organized the Opening Doors congress, to be held in Athens on October 17 and 18. The event will focus on how to improve the labor market for people with disabilities and is a key opportunity for organizations supporting this group.
The congress will feature the participation of experts, organizations, and government representatives from across Europe. Over several days, innovative solutions for promoting employment inclusion will be discussed and presented. Key topics include the implementation of inclusive policies, the development of tailored training and education programs, and the creation of accessible and welcoming work environments.
Additionally, the program includes interactive workshops, plenary sessions, and presentations of successful case studies from companies that have effectively integrated people with disabilities into their workforce. These spaces will facilitate the exchange of experiences and the generation of new ideas that can be applied in different contexts.
Participate in the congress!
Participation in this congress offers multiple benefits for organizations supporting people with disabilities. They will be able to learn firsthand about the latest trends and practices in employment inclusion, establish contact networks with other organizations and professionals in the sector, and access resources and tools to help them improve their services.
In a context where employment inclusion is crucial for the well-being and autonomy of people with disabilities, events like the EASPD 2024 Congress are essential. They provide us with the opportunity to join forces, share knowledge, and advance towards a more inclusive and fair labor market.
We encourage all organizations supporting people with intellectual disabilities to register and actively participate in this congress. Together, we can contribute to positive change and offer better job opportunities.
