This year we collaborated with other organisations on the study “Rompiendo el círculo de la pobreza: una investigación clave sobre pobreza, discapacidad intelectual y vida independiente”, promoted by Asociación Liber.
The study was carried out throughout 2025 using a rigorous methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative data from nearly 2,300 people across Spain. Our organisation contributed data on the reality of more than 700 people we support, helping to understand how poverty and economic exclusion affect daily life, autonomy projects and the possibility of living independently.
The findings highlight deep inequalities in terms of income, access to employment, additional costs associated with disability and barriers to achieving independent living.
Some key findings we helped to bring to light include:
- A high percentage of people live at risk of poverty or in severe poverty.
- Few people have access to paid employment, with most working in sheltered environments.
- Disability-related expenses represent a significant additional economic burden for most people.
- Housing and autonomy-related resources remain obstacles to developing independent life projects.
This study shows that economic barriers are not temporary, but are deeply rooted in social structures and in the work of promoting autonomy and rights. For this reason, we believe these results should help drive fairer public policies, increase support and ensure real opportunities for independent living for everyone.
