This year, we once again experienced the Feria de Abril with great enthusiasm, after being unable to celebrate it last year due to the general blackout. This time, however, we approached it from a different perspective: closer, more welcoming, and designed so that everyone can take part comfortably.

At Som – Fundació, we are committed to inclusive leisure that not only creates spaces for gathering, but also takes into account the real needs of people with intellectual disabilities. That is why, this year, we organized the Feria de Abril with a more local approach, prioritizing the participation of people who live near Barcelona. This decision has allowed us to avoid overcrowding and ensure a more accessible, calm, and welcoming environment for everyone.

A different point of view

One of the new features this year was handing over the camera to the participants themselves. We encouraged them to capture the moments of the day from their own perspective. The result is a collection of authentic, spontaneous, and meaningful images that reflect a very personal experience of the Feria. It is another way of encouraging active participation and giving value to their voice in the story of what we share.

Collaboration with local entities

The event took place in the caseta of the Hermandad del Pastorcillo Divino, which warmly and generously welcomed us. The space, full of music, colours and tradition, became a meeting point for more than a hundred people we support, as well as professionals from local teams. From the very beginning, the atmosphere was outstanding: laughter, conversations, reunions and a strong desire to enjoy the moment.

More than leisure

These types of activities have a value that goes far beyond leisure. They are spaces where bonds are created, a sense of belonging is strengthened, and active participation in the community is encouraged. Being able to attend a celebration like the Feria de Abril, share it with others and feel part of a community is, in itself, an inclusive experience.

Throughout the afternoon, music and dancing took centre stage. Some people felt encouraged to go out onto the dance floor, while others preferred to enjoy the atmosphere from their tables, but everyone found their place. This diversity of ways to participate is key: inclusive leisure does not impose, but offers options so that each person can experience it at their own pace and according to their preferences.

The team, essential

Local teams played a fundamental role in this day. Their close and constant support makes it possible for these activities to take place with safety, trust and well-being. They are the ones who know each person well, who facilitate participation and who help create an environment of respect and mutual understanding. This connection is the foundation on which positive experiences like yesterday’s are built.
At Som – Fundació, we continue working to ensure that leisure is an accessible right for everyone. We understand leisure as an essential part of quality of life, a space for personal growth and connection with others. That is why we will continue to promote activities that place people at the centre, respect their diversity, and contribute to building a more inclusive society.
